Safe Driving in Severe UK Weather: Heavy Rain, Fog, Ice & Surface Water

Written by BestPetrolPrices Safety Board

Unpredictable weather is a hallmark of driving in the UK. Whether facing torrential Atlantic rainstorms, sudden autumn fog banks, or sub-zero winter frost, adapting your driving style is crucial for staying safe and avoiding preventable collisions.

1. Driving in Heavy Rain & Avoiding Aquaplaning

Standing water creates the risk of aquaplaning—where a wedge of water builds up beneath the tyres, causing the vehicle to lose physical contact with the tarmac. If steering suddenly feels light or unresponsive:

  • Ease off the accelerator gently: Do not brake aggressively or violently jerk the steering wheel.
  • Hold the wheel straight: Allow the tyre tread to cut through the standing water and re-establish traction.
  • Double your stopping distance: Stopping distances on wet roads are at least double those on dry tarmac (from 4 seconds rather than 2 seconds).
Highway Code Rule 227: In wet conditions, allow at least double the standard 2-second separation gap between your vehicle and the car ahead. In icy conditions, increase this gap by up to ten times.

2. Fog & Visibility: Proper Lighting Protocol

Highway Code Rule 226 dictates that fog lights should only be used when visibility falls below 100 metres (328 feet)—roughly the length of a football pitch. Using fog lights in light drizzle or clear conditions dazzles following drivers and is an offence under UK road traffic law. Remember to switch them off as soon as visibility improves.

3. Black Ice & Freezing Conditions

Black ice is virtually invisible transparent ice that forms on road surfaces, especially on bridges, flyovers, tree-lined rural lanes, and sheltered dips. If driving in freezing temperatures:

  • Drive in the highest gear possible to reduce torque and prevent wheelspin when moving off.
  • Brake gently well before corners and bends.
  • Listen to road noise: if tyre spray noise suddenly vanishes, the road beneath you may have turned to sheet ice.
